Cowin's Vocabulary Explosion

As of yesterday, little man said his name for the first time. It was awesome! Okay, he didn't say CoLLin, you know, with "L's," but, he did say, "Cowin," and to Mommy, that's just as good. In fact, it's better because it's totally cuter. Just to be sure I heard him correctly, I asked him no less than thirty thousand times yesterday: "What's your name?" And yes, the answer was undoubtedly "Cowin!" And, most times, he thumped his chest. Can't you just see that!

It started with Gracie...as most things do with him. She has a habit of saying, "Gracie's turn" when she wants something. Well, she took a shovel from his hand, and it occurred to him to take it back and say "Cowin!" Hooray! He knows it's his and can label himself. Well, too bad he can't tack on that extra word, "turn."
Amber, (who...p.s. Collin calls "Awwer") our speech therapist has been having us work on two-word phrases for weeks now. Cowin is not cooperating. It's like Abbot and Costello's "Who's on First" routine trying to get this kid to do two words. Amber said to try to get him to do simple things like say hi or bye to his toys or to things he likes seeing, like cars or buses (his FAVE!). He waves bye to a bus and our conversation goes as follows:

Cowin: Bye
Mommy: Bye what?
Cowin: Bus
Mommy: Bus where?
Cowin: Bye
Mommy: Bye bus?
Cowin: yeah
Mommy: Can you say bye bus?
Cowin: yeah
Mommy: bye bus?
Cowin: bus
Mommy: bye bus?
Cowin: bus
Mommy: bye?
Cowin: bye
Mommy: bus?
Cowin: bye
Mommy: nevermind
Anyway, he's totally increasing is vocabulary at an exponential rate. I'm so pleased. Amber thinks it's possible that he may just have a simple speech delay after all. Wheee. Today alone, he said "power!" asking to watch "Potty Power," a video he hasn't seen in months, stroller, stick (and yes that one came out as stick, not in a dirty way...phew), and lights. I love hearing what new things he'll come up with. He calls giraffe's, necks! It's so funny. He calls baths, wash.
But, now that he's got some words, he's starting to use them! He has developed a preference for crackers, cookies and CAKE! Darn that Thanksgiving when we had cake. Every day, he asks for it. EVERY stinking day. Seriously. He doesn't get it, but thinks he will, that stinker. Little cutie in that chair asking for "caackaas" and "cooookees." Man, it's hard to say no when they have those cute voices, isn't it. I'm just glad we don't have that food in this house or my supertank of a kid wouldn't fit through the front door by now.

As you can see, no pictures really go with what I'm talking about. But, I went nuts taking pictures of him yesterday in the tub and throughout his day. So enjoy cute, naked baby pictures! I'm sure he'll love me when he's eighteen. What? His bride will live me when she comes looking for embarrassing baby photos for that slide show they want to put together for their wedding reception, won't she! And hey, they're carefully taken to avoid the zone.

I have every confidence that Collin will be talking up a storm by his second birthday. I know that little guy is smart as a whip.

They just love to drive you crazy with thoes crazy speech delays, just like Austin..100's of signs but no words, then all of a sudden words by the dozens! It seems like we haven't see you guys in forever, especially now that Cowin :-) is talking! And the bath pictures are great!
